Military Washers & Mil-spec Washers FAQ
Are military washers and mil-spec washers the same thing?
Yes. "Military washer," "mil-spec washer," "milspec washer," and "military flat washer" all refer to washers manufactured to meet documented military or aerospace procurement standards, such as AN (Aeronautical Standard), MS (Military Standard), or NAS (National Aerospace Standard). The terms are used interchangeably in defense and aerospace procurement. What matters is that the part number traces back to a published specification defining exact dimensions, material, and finish requirements.
What standards do your military washers adhere to?
Superior Washer manufactures to three primary military and aerospace standard families: AN (Aeronautical Standards), MS (Military Standards), and NAS (National Aerospace Standards). Within those families we produce to specific drawing numbers including AN901, AN960, AN961, AN970, MS14151, MS15795, MS16212, MS20002, MS21206, MS21299, MS27183, MS51412, MS51496, MS51859, MS91124, MS9321, MS9549, NAS1149, NAS1515, NAS1587, and NAS620.
What is ISO 9001:2015 and why does it matter for military washers?
ISO 9001:2015 is the internationally recognized standard for Quality Management Systems (QMS). It requires a manufacturer to document, implement, and continuously improve processes that ensure products consistently meet customer and regulatory requirements. For military and aerospace procurement, ISO 9001:2015 certification signals that our manufacturing and inspection processes are regularly audited by an independent third party, in our case, DNV, confirming compliance. All Superior Washer military products are manufactured under this certified QMS.
Are you DFARS compliant?
Yes. We provide DFARS compliance documentation for our military washers. However, DFARS specialty metal restrictions do not apply to all materials. Many of our most common washer materials including 1008/1010 and 1020 low carbon steel, brass alloy 260, copper alloy 110, aluminum, and nylon are exempt from DFARS specialty metal requirements and are commercially available without restriction. Materials that do fall under DFARS specialty metal rules (such as stainless steel, titanium, and nickel alloys) are sourced from the United States or qualifying countries. Material certifications and DFARS compliance documentation are available upon request.
Are your military washers made in the USA?
Yes. All military washers we offer are manufactured in the United States at our facilities in Hauppauge, NY and Rock Hill, SC. Our CAGE codes are 1L160 (NY) and 4WUG7 (SC).
Can you provide material certifications?
Yes. Full material certifications are available for all military washers. These certifications provide traceability from raw material to finished part, supporting government and prime contractor procurement requirements.
Do you offer custom or non-standard military washers?
Yes. While our catalog covers the most common mil-spec part numbers in stock, we also produce custom washers to special dimensions or materials. Contact us for a quote on non-catalog configurations.
