Curved Washer FAQs
What are curved spring washers?
Curved spring washers, also called curved disc washers or single-wave washers, are formed washers with a gentle single-arc curve across their diameter. Unlike flat washers, curved washers act as light-duty spring elements, providing flexible load distribution and accommodating axial play and thermal expansion in fastener assemblies. Superior Washer manufactures 905 curved washer configurations in spring steel and stainless steel, in sizes 0 through 28.
What is the difference between a curved washer and a Belleville washer?
A Belleville washer has a steep conical profile and generates high spring force within a very short deflection range. A curved washer has a gentle single-wave arc and generates lower, more gradual spring force over a longer deflection range.
Belleville washers are used where high preload force is needed in a compact space. Curved washers are used in lighter-duty applications requiring flexible load distribution, vibration dampening, and take-up of assembly play without high clamping force.
What is the difference between a curved washer and a three-wave washer?
A curved washer has a single arc across its diameter, producing a relatively soft spring rate. A three-wave washer has three evenly spaced waves around its circumference, producing a higher and more uniform spring force. For applications requiring consistent axial preload and bearing retention, three-wave washers are the better choice. For light-duty flex and play take-up, curved washers are simpler and more economical.
What does the "Size" designation mean on curved washers?
The size designation on curved washers (0, 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, etc.) corresponds to the nominal screw or bolt size the washer is designed to fit. Size 0 fits a #0 screw, size 10 fits a #10 screw, and so on through larger fastener sizes. The ID and OD dimensions listed in each product entry confirm the actual bore and outer diameter.
What applications use curved spring washers?
Curved washers are used in light-duty spring applications including electrical contact springs, panel fastener assemblies, consumer products, automotive interior components, and any assembly where the washer must accommodate slight dimensional variation or take up axial play under a fastener without generating high clamping force. They are also used as cushioning elements to prevent surface damage under fastener heads.
What materials are your curved spring washers available in?
