Belleville Washer FAQs
What are Belleville washers?
Belleville washers, also called Belleville disc springs or conical disc springs, are non-flat, conical-profile spring elements that generate high spring force within a very compact axial space. Unlike flat washers, Belleville washers are intentionally formed with a cone angle that deflects under load, providing controlled spring force and maintaining consistent preload in fastener assemblies, valve seats, clutch packs, and bearing arrangements. Superior Washer manufactures 526 Belleville configurations in spring steel and stainless steel.
How do Belleville washers work?
When a load is applied axially to a Belleville washer, the conical disc deflects toward a flat position. The force required to produce this deflection is determined by the washer’s dimensions, cone angle, and material, including the ID, OD, thickness, and free height (the unloaded height of the cone). The free height (Free H) is a critical specification listed with every Superior Washer Belleville product.
What is "Free H" on a Belleville washer?
Free H refers to the free height of the Belleville washer, which is the overall axial height of the conical disc in its unloaded state. It represents how much the washer can deflect before it reaches a fully flat position. Free H is a primary design parameter for calculating spring force and deflection, and is listed with every configuration in the catalog.
Can Belleville washers be stacked?
Yes. Belleville washers can be stacked in two ways. Stacking in parallel (same orientation) multiplies the load capacity while maintaining the same deflection as a single washer. Stacking in series (alternating orientation) multiplies the deflection range while maintaining the same load. Combining parallel and series stacking gives designers additional flexibility using standard Belleville washers.
What materials are your Belleville washers available in?
Superior Washer Belleville washers are available in spring steel and stainless steel.
What applications use Belleville washers?
Belleville washers are used wherever high spring force must be delivered in a compact axial space. Common applications include bolted joint preload maintenance in thermal cycling environments, valve spring elements, clutch and brake assemblies, bearing preload in precision spindles, pressure relief valves, safety devices, and vibration isolation in aerospace and defense equipment.
Are your Belleville washers made in the USA?
Yes. All Belleville disc spring washers are manufactured in the United States at our facilities in Hauppauge, NY (CAGE Code: 1L160) and Rock Hill, SC (CAGE Code: 4WUG7) under our ISO 9001:2015 certified Quality Management System. Material certifications are available upon request.
