What are PTFE flat washers?
PTFE flat washers are manufactured from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commercially known as Teflon. PTFE has the lowest coefficient of friction of any solid material, near-universal chemical inertness, and a usable temperature range from cryogenic to approximately +500 degrees F (+260 degrees C). These properties make PTFE washers the first choice for chemical, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, and food processing applications.
What makes PTFE unique compared to other plastic washer materials?
PTFE is virtually chemically inert, resistant to almost every chemical including concentrated acids, bases, and solvents that attack other plastics. It is also non-stick, non-conductive, non-magnetic, FDA compliant, and biocompatible. No other plastic material combines all of these properties in a single material.
What are the limitations of PTFE washers?
PTFE has relatively low compressive strength and tends to cold flow (creep) under sustained load, which can cause loss of clamping force over time in high-stress fastener joints. For applications with high clamp loads, glass-filled or carbon-filled PTFE compounds offer improved creep resistance while retaining most of PTFE's chemical resistance.
