What are precision shims?
Precision shims are thin, flat components used to fill gaps, adjust clearances, align machine components, and compensate for dimensional variation in mechanical assemblies. Unlike standard flat washers, shims are manufactured to extremely tight thickness tolerances and are available in very thin gauges. Superior Washer manufactures over 2,500 shim configurations in stainless steel, carbon steel, high carbon steel, brass, and copper.

What is the difference between a shim and a flat washer?
Flat washers are designed for use under fastener heads to distribute load and protect surfaces. Shims are precision-thickness components used to control exact gaps and clearances between mating parts. Shims are typically much thinner than washers, held to tighter dimensional tolerances, and are used in alignment, adjustment, and calibration applications rather than in standard fastener assemblies.

What materials are your shims available in?
Superior Washer shims are available in stainless steel (1,578 configurations), low carbon steel (638 configurations), high carbon steel (123 configurations), brass (186 configurations), and copper (21 configurations). Stainless steel is the most widely stocked shim material for its combination of corrosion resistance, strength, and dimensional stability.

What thickness range do your shims cover?
Superior Washer shims are available in thicknesses from 0.001 inch through 0.015 inch and beyond, with the majority of the catalog concentrated in the 0.001 to 0.015 inch range. What are common applications for precision shims?
Precision shims are used in machine tool alignment, bearing preload adjustment, gear and shaft spacing, mold and die alignment, aerospace structural assemblies, automotive engine and transmission assembly, and any application requiring exact gap control between mating components.
